The Process

Select a straight culm of Tonkin cane with deep and dense power fibers

Split into strips called splines and position nodes

Straighten splines and flatten nodes with heat

Hand plane each spline to an equilateral triangular cross section that tapers from one end to the other

Heat treat to remove moisture and temper the bamboo

  Finish planing to desired taper

Glue six splines together to form the hexagonal shape

Hand sand to prepare sections for finishing

Dip each section three times in spar varnish and hand wipe with linseed oil and rottenstone to produce a durable waterproof satin finish

Mount nickel silver Super Swiss ferrules

Assemble cork grip and reel seat with nickel silver hardware and natural wood insert

  Position and wrap line guides

Finish wraps with four coats of varnish
