The Process • Select a straight culm of Tonkin cane with
deep and dense power fibers • Split into strips called splines and
position nodes • Straighten splines and flatten nodes with
heat • Hand plane each spline to an equilateral
triangular cross section that tapers from one end to the other • Heat treat to remove moisture and temper
the bamboo • Finish planing to desired taper • Glue six splines together to form the
hexagonal shape • Hand sand to prepare sections for
finishing • Dip each section three times in spar
varnish and hand wipe with linseed oil and rottenstone to produce a durable
waterproof satin finish • Mount nickel silver Super Swiss ferrules • Assemble cork grip and reel seat with
nickel silver hardware and natural wood insert • Position and wrap line guides • Finish wraps with four coats of varnish
